Shirley & Jack's Wedding at Stewart Manor | Garden City, NY

February 21, 2019  •  Leave a Comment

We had a mutual friend, Stephanie, who had introduced us via AIM 13 years ago when we were 16 years old. Shirley was weird and awkward - even more so in person. It was her unique personality that attracted me because I, too, was purposely weird and awkward with friends in school. We started dating after a few years of being friends. The more we dated, the weirder we both got. But more importantly, the more I knew she was someone with who I would want to grow old. At one point, it felt like we were already married. But we both wanted the world to know this. On the evening of February 9th 2018, I had left work about an hour earlier to setup a few pictures and lights I had ordered online a few weeks earlier. I arrived home on schedule but Shirley texted me to let me know her shift ended and was nearly home - about 15 minutes earlier than I had anticipated so I asked her to pick up some dinner to stall for time. I hung the lights and pictures on the window curtains and found a wrinkle-free dress shirt, new dark jeans, and my wool blazer. I waited about 15 minutes, with sweaty palms and ring in hand, before she opened the door and walked into the dark apartment lit up only by the small light fixtures I hung up. I was sitting on our ottoman. I let out a sigh of relief. And at that moment, even before I knelt, I saw the perfect person. - Jack
